Professor emeritus of Computer Science, Cornell University. Hartmanis was born in Latvia, received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Marburg in Germany, his Master's degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Kansas City in 1951, and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1955.
